Reconciliation through Wellness
Funded through United Way of Central Alberta
Through traditional supports, counselling supports, Healing Circles, and access to Elders/Knowledge Keepers, this project assists Indigenous individuals and families in their healing journey. Additionally, it is becoming increasingly important that service providers be able to address the needs of Indigenous peoples beyond trauma-informed training, but inclusive of Indigenous trauma awareness. Delivery of this training allows service providers to be more responsive to and supportive of the depth of intergenerational and individual trauma experienced by Indigenous peoples.
Family Violence Prevention
Funded through Department of Indigenous Services
Many of the individuals and families accessing Shining Mountains programs and services continue to struggle with their historical and current traumas; having experienced physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and sexual abuse. These traumas lead many to struggle with violence, housing instability, substance use, unsafe sexual practices, and other issues that lead to a cycle of relapse, re-offending, and re-incarceration, tearing at the fabric of the family unit.
In spite of these overwhelming challenges, those who get involved in their culture, who work on their traumas, work with Elders/Knowledge Keepers, counselors and healers, make tremendous changes in their lives, and begin to heal their families.
